EMOI Hanoi — a Japanese-style izakaya at 63 Ham Long Street, Cua Nam Ward, Hanoi
Paper lanterns, grilled skewers, sashimi and city pop — a corner of Tokyo after dark, about 1 km from Hoan Kiem Lake
At No. 63 Ham Long, paper lanterns lettered in Japanese fill the ceiling, a wall is covered with hundreds of wooden ema plaques carrying guests' wishes, a shrine-style roof is lined with red lights and large paper fans show ukiyo-e prints. The kitchen serves sashimi, hand rolls, grilled skewers and teriyaki eel, with a menu that changes with the seasons; 1980s Japanese city pop mixes with live DJ sets, and staff in blue happi coats trimmed in orange get the whole room joining in for birthday celebrations. Open 6 PM – 12:30 AM daily. Free reservations on +84 905 806 704.

Concept
An orange crest on Ham Long Street
The name EMOI comes from エモい — Japanese youth slang for the kind of feeling that wells up and stirs you. The logo is an orange family crest on an ultramarine disc, and the line on the fanpage sums up the spirit: Savor the emotion, taste the flavors. Inside No. 63 Ham Long, that emotion is built from very concrete things: paper lanterns carrying dish names in Japanese, a wall of wooden ema plaques hung with guests' wishes, brass-slatted railings around rows of velvet sofas, and large paper fans printed with ukiyo-e that open whenever someone celebrates a birthday. Local guides describe EMOI as a modern Japanese street izakaya — food, music and table games all in one space — inspired by the bright streets around Shibuya.
